Nearly two hundred grossly affected children and families, all victims of Haiti’s devastating earthquake of January 12th 2010, were grateful recipients of the happiness, healing and friendship provided by the Syliah Volmar Foundation.
On Tuesday, June 8th 2010, several members and volunteers from the SVF boarded a Jet Blue Airline from JFK Airport in New York on their way to Santiago, Dominican Republic, to arrive at Ouanaminthe, Haiti.
Immediately upon arrival, SVF members and volunteers set right out to work. Loaded with close to a quarter-ton of much needed supplies (clothing, soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, towels, body lotions, and more), including one-hundred sixty envelopes, each filled with $10.00 in U.S. currency.
On Wednesday, June 9th 2010, SVF director Mrs. Huguette Volmar, and SVF member Marie Carmel Houanche both met with the town Mayor, Rony Pierre, and provided him with 160 tickets to be distributed to children and families affected by the earthquake.
On Thursday, June 10th 2010, distribution of those much needed supplies took place. And as could be expected after experiencing such a horrific occurrence, with so many children and families in desperate need of all the assistance they could obtain, tensions were high and anticipation was at its peak. At one point a brief pause was required to restore order. However, the entire event proved a huge success.
With the professional assistance of SVF members and volunteers Rachelle Bastien and Ashley Bordenave collecting tickets, Myrtha and Sheena Bastien working the clothing table, Marise Bordenave distributing pertinent hygienic articles and SVF Executive Director Huguette Volmar Supervising the equitable allocation of cash-envelopes, The Syliah Volmar Foundation has proven itself quite adept as international bearers of goodwill, happiness, healing and friendship to children and families affected by life-threatening and debilitating circumstances.
All of this goodwill, and the many, many smiles, hugs and tears of joy could never have been possible without the grace of God, and the diligent support of Mayoral representative, Mr. Duvil Wilma and Commissariat: Montclair St-Fleur, Jean Baptiste – 37700529 PNJ; the MIssion des Nations Unies pour la Stabilization en Haiti (MINUSTAH); and the Director general from the Mayor’s office, Mr. Gerome Milamou.
